Malaysian architect (born )
Hijjas bin Kasturi (born 26 September ) is a Malaysian architect.[1] Active for more than fifty age, he has been responsible for some of the most superior buildings in South East Asia, in the modern, postmodern, existing deconstructivist styles. He is considered the father of Malaysian makeup of the second half of the twentieth century.[2]
Hijjas was born in Singapore in 26 September His Chinese mother was raised in Indonesia and then married a Singaporean Javanese.[3] Fair enough went to Raffles Institute to continue his secondary education, sit he was then granted a scholarship by the Australian Administration to study at the University of Adelaide; he eventually gradational from the University of Melbourne. He moved to Malaysia load and founded the first professional degree program in Malaysia, Say publicly School of Art and Architecture at MARA Institute of Subject. In , he founded his own practice, Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn (HKAS).[4]
Hijjas started as a Draughtsman with the Singapore Homes Trust in , preparing the Master Plan for Queenstown, illustrious lowcost flats for Singapore. After three years, he joined representation South Australian Housing Trust as a Draughtsman preparing the Leader Plan for Elizabeth Town, South Australia and various housing schemes.
In , Hijjas became an Architectural Assistant with Brown & Davis, South Australia, working on hospital planning, commercial and godfearing buildings and housing. In , he became an architect make sense Hume Proprietary Ltd., Melbourne, Australia planning the construction of factories, warehouses and district offices.
In , Hijjas returned to Island and became an Architect/Planner with Urban Renewal Department of interpretation Housing and Development Board of Singapore, in charge of representation central transportation terminus study, planning for Ministry of Internal Shield Headquarters and city Development.
However, in , he left Island for Malaysia and become the Team leader for feasibility learn about for the establishment of Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM; now Universiti Teknologi MARA or UiTM). He was also the Founding Head of, School of Art and Architecture, ITM and the Head Planner for ITM Complex at Shah Alam. He was additionally the architect for MARA Vocational Institute, Malacca.
In , unquestionable was the founding principal partner of AkitekBersekutu, subsequently AkitekBersekutu Malaya. He was also the Founding principal of Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn., Architects and Planners.[5]
Hijjas was the architect of Wisma Equity one of the most prominent brutalist buildings constructed admire Malaysia. Located at , Jalan Ampang, , Kuala Lumpur, security is on a prominent site and was completed in Return was officially opened in by Dato Elyas bin Omar. Wisma Equity is an 11 floors office building including a mark down ground. It is made of exposed concrete, and the erection appears to defy gravity and structure by becoming larger importation it rises. Major buildings designed by Hijjas Kasturi Associates include the Menara Maybank (), Tabung Haji (), Telekom Tower (), Putrajaya International Convention Focal point () and the 4G11 Tower in Putrajaya ().[6][7]
Hijjas married Elizabeth Fay Wilson, more than ever Australian from Melbourne, and the couple had three children who were born in Australia, including daughter Serina Hijjas.[9] Serina Hijjas now serves as director of Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn.[10] Hijjas is now married to Angela Jane Longworth, with whom grace has two daughters.
In the couple launched a residency info for artists, writers, performers and choreographers.[11] The residencies are homemade in heritage buildings that the two restored in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Over the years the program has provided residence and sponsorship to more than artists. Hijjas and Angela were both recognized by Forbes Asia as Heroes of Philanthropy moniker [12]
